Founded in 1996 in Jacksonville, Florida by Master Personal Trainer and fitness expert Joe Augustine, Body by Design Studio has now grown to three additional locations, including our newest personal training studios in Raleigh and in North Raleigh. Our practice currently includes over 350 private clients, and Joe has trained with such notable figures as world championship body builder and three-time Arnold Classic Winner Dexter Jackson, pop music star Lauren Fincham, and model and fitness champion Sylvia Shannon. "By my 55th birthday, my lifestyle had begun to take its toll on my body and my health. As an administrator for the federal government, I was traveling frequently, eating too much hotel food and not getting any exercise.

 

I felt and looked at least 10 years older than I was and I knew it was time to do something. I joined a gym but felt out of place every time I went in. I tried one of the gym’s “trainers,” a muscle head who just made me feel…well…dumb and old. I moved to one of the popular women’s fitness chains thinking this would be better – it wasn’t. At least at the gym they had real equipment, but the women’s gym had mostly rubber bands and balls. Like women can’t handle real workouts! Over a year later, all I had done was waste my money and my time. I tried a well known national diet too, but I didn’t find much success there either. I went to the meetings and weigh-ins religiously but my results were inconsistent. I kept buying their food and stepping on their scales, but in nearly two years never maintained a weight loss of more than a few pounds.

As a physician, I know the importance of being healthy and fit – I also know how difficult it can be to realize that goal. Despite my years of training in medicine and my clinical experience with the consequences of unhealthy lifestyles, I realized three years ago just how unhealthy I had become myself. My cholesterol and blood pressure were certainly higher than they should be, my endurance, even in everyday tasks, was not good, and I had put on nearly 40 pounds since college. It was getting hard to hide my “spare tire” even under my lab coat, and I certainly couldn’t hide it from my wife. I knew I needed to take control of my health both for personal reasons and to set a good example for my patients.

 

I headed straight to my local gym and got on a weight lifting routine I remembered from high school. I did great – for about two weeks until my motivation started to go. A few things came up at work…then at home…then there were plans with friends…then I needed to start my exercise program over again.

 

This time I enlisted the help of a friend who also needed to get in shape. We’d be training partners to help keep each other motivated, and it would be more fun to train with a friend. We started over and it worked pretty well for the first month – then I just lost my motivation again. This was going to be much harder than I remembered from high school!

 

Then I heard about Joe and Body by Design from one of the doctors I work with. He had been training with Joe and had also referred patients.

 

I had never worked with a trainer before, but as it turned out it was exactly what I needed! They didn’t just train my body, they trained my mind to stay motivated to be fit every day of my life. That motivation has made all the difference to me. I’ve trained regularly now for two days a week for two years. So far I’ve lost over 40 pounds of fat while gaining 18 pounds of lean muscle…and I’ve never looked or felt better! My patients have definitely noticed the difference and I’m thrilled that some of them now consider me their motivation to get fit. My wife says she still can’t believe the change in me, and she’s been so impressed she’s training with Joe now too!

"When I gave birth to twins, I quickly became convinced that my pre-Mommy body was gone forever. Before my pregnancy I was 5’7” tall and weighed 126 pounds, not fit but at least thin.

 

No one was calling me thin any more. I gained nearly 60 pounds during the pregnancy and lost only 18 lbs. from the birth. Despite a hectic schedule as a new stay-at-home mom I wasn’t losing any weight – in fact I was gaining. After six months I decided to do something - and fast. I joined a group exercise class that promised a complete workout in only 30 minutes. I managed to go 4 times a week but nothing was happening. I always felt rushed by the instructor who seemed most interested in just getting us out the door.

 

I also joined the diet group where you buy all of your meals pre-made from them. I did lose 15 pounds, but then couldn’t seem to drop any more weight. I got tired of the food and the hassles of the program so I stopped. The weight came back.

 

Then a new friend told me about Joe. I went in and Joe explained how strength training would build muscle, burn fat and boost my metabolism. It wasn’t going to take any more time that I was spending before, and my training sessions wouldn’t make me feel self-conscious like I did in those group classes.
